Minimising waste

An important way to tackle waste problems is to reduce the amount of material that we throw away. So the city council is promoting the ‘reduce and re-use’ philosophy while also increasing opportunities for residents to recycle materials.

For example, many people are opting for re-usable shopping bags rather than single-use, disposable plastic bags.  People can take good quality clothing to charity shops and other fabrics to clothing ‘bring banks’.

UK residents throw away one third, or 6.7 million tonnes, of the food they buy annually – equal to £420 for an average family. Fruit and vegetables, such as apples, potatoes, bananas, tomatoes and oranges, represent 40 per cent of the total.  Careful buying and storage of food will reduce waste and could save you money.
